Las Cuatro Milpas Faces Financial Crisis Amid Health Violations |
Iconic San Diego Eatery Confronts Unpaid Taxes and Operational Challenges |
Las Cuatro Milpas, a cornerstone of San Diego's culinary scene since 1933, is grappling with significant financial and operational hurdles that threaten its future.
County officials have reported that the restaurant owes over $60,000 in overdue property taxes. If these debts are not settled by March 2026, the establishment risks a government-mandated asset sale. Additional tax liens, including $103,000 in unpaid state sales taxes and more than $30,000 owed to the federal government, bring the total outstanding debts to over $190,000.
Despite its enduring popularity and the daily lines of patrons at its Logan Avenue location, Las Cuatro Milpas has faced mounting challenges. In January 2025, the restaurant was forced to close for nearly three weeks following multiple failed health inspections. These inspections uncovered a severe German cockroach infestation and widespread sanitary violations, including live and dead cockroaches in food preparation areas, gaps in walls, and plumbing issues. The establishment was only permitted to reopen after addressing these critical health concerns.
Real estate experts estimate that the property could fetch nearly $3 million on the open market, assuming no encumbrances affect the land or structures. However, as of now, the owners have not confirmed any plans to sell.
Founded by Petra and Natividad Estudillo, Las Cuatro Milpas has been a beloved institution, offering handmade tortillas, rolled tacos, burritos, and tamales. Its simple, authentic menu has attracted generations of locals and visitors alike.
As the March 2026 deadline approaches, the community watches closely to see whether the family can resolve these financial issues, opt to sell, or face the possibility of relinquishing ownership of one of San Diego’s most historic dining establishments. For now, Las Cuatro Milpas remains open at 1857 Logan Avenue in Barrio Logan.
