Paloma Aguirre Poised to Secure San Diego County Supervisor Seat |
Imperial Beach Mayor Leads in District 1 Special Election |
Imperial Beach Mayor Paloma Aguirre is on the verge of becoming the next San Diego County Supervisor for District 1, following the latest vote counts from Tuesday's special election.
As of 11 p.m. Tuesday, Aguirre held a commanding lead over her opponent, Chula Vista Mayor John McCann, with 53.2% of the vote compared to McCann's 46.8%.
The San Diego County Registrar of Voters reported approximately 9,500 ballots remaining to be counted. With Aguirre leading by 4,519 votes, McCann would need to secure over 73% of the outstanding votes to overturn the current margin—a highly improbable scenario given his current vote share of just over 46%.
These figures suggest that Aguirre is on track to represent the 640,000 residents of South San Diego County as their new supervisor.
At a lively election night gathering at Novo Brazil Brewery in Imperial Beach, Aguirre expressed her gratitude and optimism. "I'm incredibly grateful," she said. "It's early, but results are looking favorable."
Upon assuming office, Aguirre plans to prioritize a five-point strategy aimed at addressing the ongoing sewage crisis in the Tijuana River. Additionally, she intends to implement measures to protect San Diego residents from potential federal budget cuts affecting healthcare and social services.
"I'm fighting for immigrants, workers, people working hard to put their kids through school and put food on the table," Aguirre emphasized.
Meanwhile, McCann, who hosted his own watch party at a restaurant in Otay Ranch, remained cautious about conceding the race. "This is the first of many [election] returns," he stated. "We feel like we are in a competitive position. My campaign was always about making life more affordable, reducing homelessness, and fighting taxes. I'm proud we pushed hard on all those fronts and I will continue to deliver on each of those issues."
The election night atmosphere at Aguirre's event was electric, with supporters chanting, "¡Sí, se puede!" and "Paloma! Paloma!"
District 4 Supervisor Monica Montgomery Steppe shared her excitement, noting, "This is encouraging and gives us hope after today's Senate vote on Trump's Big Beautiful Bill. We have the best chance of providing a barrier for the residents of San Diego County against the actions of the federal government."
In her address to supporters, Aguirre highlighted the collective effort behind her campaign. "This was a collective, people-powered movement, and we're just getting started," she declared. "We're done with a county government that doesn't represent our community."
As the final votes are tallied, the community awaits the official confirmation of Aguirre's victory, which would mark a significant shift in the county's leadership dynamics.
